Ximena Garrido-Lecca (b. 1980) is based in both London and Lima, where she originally hails from. Having studied at Universidad Católica del Perú, she then received her MA from Byam Shaw School of Art, London. Garrido-Lecca is a strong advocate for the revival of Peru’s indigenous culture, and often makes references to European art traditions to critique and rebalance history. This sculpture is part of series of textiles created by weaving insulated copper wires together, based on the patterns of pre Columbian textiles. Here, tradition meets technology. Having hand-written coded notations of the patterns and repeated motifs within the Columbian weaves, the artist then translated these notations into a logical programming code. The patterns were interpreted as constants, which then developed into a language based on commands through javascript. For textiles with twining elements, the knots were translated into a vector system that translated them into code. Thus, as electricity flows through the ‘textile, ’ the LED screen at the base of the work is powered, displaying the code developed by the programme. It becomes a flow of energy and information.
