Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian (1922 – 2019) was an Iranian artist whose career spanned over six decades. Fascinated by the potentials of geometry and inspired by traditional glass painting and mirror mosaics, Farmanfarmaian’s work breathes new life into these forms through modern abstraction. She works across multiple mediums, and is best known for her ‘mirror mosaics,’ comprised of cut-glass that was then re-arranged by hand. The geometric focus and sense of balance in her work recalls Islamic art and elements of Sufism. The first Iranian to ever have their art exhibited at the Solomon. R. Guggenheim in New York, Farmanfarmaian’s work is now also held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Modern, Queensland Gallery of Contemporary Art and the MoMA New York.
