British painter Ben Spiers (b. 1972) combines abstraction, surrealism, and fantasy in his canvases, creating wonderfully unsettling compositions. Experimental, highly detailed and often Dalíesque in their distortion, Spier’s work defies clear categorization — merging traditional painting techniques with a modernist and entirely unique approach to figuration. He demonstrates a profound knowledge of Art History, while drawing from a diverse range of subject inspiration, including the special effects of ‘Terminator 2.’ Spiers studied at Goldsmiths University and later tutored at City and Guilds of London Art School. In 2006, he was nominated for the John Moore’s painting prize at the Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool) and was also a finalist for the 6th Manifest International Painting award in 2015. Spiers currently lives and works in London.
