Untitled Art : Miami Beach

4 - 8 December 2024

Pi Artworks invites you to enter Within a Budding Grove, a solo installation by British artist Jyll Bradley comprising photography, sculpture, wallpaper and text works. Known for her large-scale public installations, with this installation, exclusively for Untitled Art Miami,  Bradley announces a new, more intimate and personal development in her practice.

Hand-drawn complex patterns referencing hop gardens map across the floor and wall. Previously unseen photographic self-portraits captured in the 1980s are hung alongside new minimalist sculptures made from Bradley’s signature material of edge-lit plexiglass. Bradley unearths interwoven threads that span her artistic career: work that grapples with her identity as a queer woman and her life-long interest in structures for growth. The installation explores ‘queering minimalism’
a term Bradley uses to describe how abstraction and minimalism can embody coded personal narratives and experiences.

Affiliated with the YBA generation, Bradley saw some early success in the late 1980s. However, like many women artists, it is only in recent years that she has started to gain the recognition she deserves, with large-scale commissions at the Hayward Gallery, Fruitmarket Gallery and Turner Contemporary, and an upcoming major retrospective at The Box in Plymouth. Within a Budding Grove is curated by exciting young writer and curator Debbie Meniru.
