Pi Artworks is thrilled to be exhibiting five represented female artists at the Armory Show, New York, 7 -10 September 2023.
Jyll Bradley | Fatma Bucak | Sarah Dwyer I Susan Hefuna | Holly Stevenson
Bringing together the works of five leading women in our roster, this booth combines a variety of mediums to examine approaches to landscapes and the human form. Spanning painting, ceramics, collage, sculpture and photography, all five artists bring a distinctly material approach to their practice.
Susan Hefuna (b. 1962, Berlin) reflects on the experiences of her physical surroundings while on retreat in the Swiss Alps, combining these with personal, psychological experiences to reflect unknown inner landscapes in her work. As the artist states, “In the circle of nature, nothing stands still – all is constantly changing.”
In contrast, Fatma Bucak (b. 1984, Turkey) uses photography to address notions of erasure, history, political identity and gender. Though her practice incorporates, preserves and embraces landscape, here, it becomes something contested.
Holly Stevenson, (b.1975, London) through her Freudian inspired ceramic forms and Sarah Dwyer,(b. 1974, Cork) through her abstracted, painterly approach to the body, both offer insight into notions of femininity and physicality. The landscape of the body here is hinted at, rather than distinctly portrayed, with both artists embracing fluidity of form, playfulness and bold colour to touch on psychological realities too.
Jyll Bradley (b. 1966, Kent) on the other hand, uses light as a key protagonist in her works, combining the formal vigour of Minimalism with ideas of identity and place. Themes of the horticultural, of community and of spirituality come together in Bradley’s practice to encourage interaction and unity from its viewers.
