  Abraham David CHRISTIAN

Abraham David Christian creates irregular, curved, linear forms that contain a sense of fragility and purity. A prominent and repeated motif within his work over the last three decades is a sparse, spiralling shape that relentlessly encircles and devours itself. The Interconnected Sculpture.

Abraham David Christian has said he does not want to live for his art, but wants his art to live through the life he is living. He is an extensive traveller of the Near, Middle, and far East as well as Africa, Central America, and the United States. His practice reflects the cultures he has experienced during his ongoing travels. Christian’s works-on-paper and sculptures juxtapose the influence of the cannon of western abstract art alongside that of the traditions of Africa and East Asian cultures, yet they remain perfectly unique in themselves. By capturing the essence of such different journeys, his practice has an implicit, abstract, subterranean logic.

Christian was the youngest person ever to be participate in documenta when he collaborated with Joseph Beuys as part of Harold Szeemann’s documenta 5. A few years later he became the youngest person to teach at the prestigious Dusseldorf Art Academy, Germany before being invited to participate in documenta 7.
