ONLINE VIEWING ROOM
Chinese American artist, Xiaoze Xie, travels the world photographing books and manuscripts in various library collections and creates paintings based on his photographs. Deeply fascinated by books as material forms of memory, history and collective and individual consciousness, Xie has dedicated himself to this project for almost three decades. New paintings from the "Library Series" depict various subjects from institutional collections in the United States, China, and Canada. Experimenting across the divide between photorealism and abstraction, Xie's oil paintings present richly textured, palpable, almost three-dimensional forms in muted, cavernous spaces, creating a theatrical mise en scène, in which history and memory stand center stage. In Xie's brush and ink studies of Chinese books, strata of pages in the process of quiet deterioration transform into abstract patterns composed of modulating brush strokes and varying gradations of ink washes, influenced by classical Chinese landscape paintings.
